We provide 1-on-1 counseling to identify and remove any barriers that may prevent a person from making healthy changes to their unique lifestyle.
Virtual Diabetes Prevention Program
Since a busy schedule can make it difficult for people to join onsite programs, we also offer virtual options. Now, prevention can take place, on their time and at their pace.
Onsite Group Classes
Our small, intimate group classes have a supportive family-style atmosphere where participants learn how to prevent diabetes in their families and communities.
Community Screening and Events
We bring interactive educational games, screenings, and other resources to educate high-risk communities about how to reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Community Cooking Classes
Our cooking classes get to the heart of the matter. We show participants how to modify cultural cuisines and try new recipes, so they can feed their families to fight diabetes.
Articles on Healthy Living
Led by our team of Registered Dietitians, our educators publish articles about prevention, nutrition, fitness and other evidence-based tips on how to live a healthier lifestyle.
IMPACT: 600,000
WHAT BEGINS WITH EDUCATION, ENDS WITH PREVENTION
EDUCATE. EMPOWER. PREVENT. Our 3-step model has helped us impact over 600,000 lives in less than 8 years. Since our inception, educating the public about the importance of preventing type 2 diabetes has been paramount to what we do. Statistics show that 9 out 10 people with prediabetes are unaware they have this condition, therefore they may miss the opportunity to reverse it and prevent the development of type 2.
Using social media, blogging, and community outreach we have been able to share our message about prevention. Once a person knows their risk, we provide onsite and virtual prevention programs, 1-on-1 counseling, online nutrition education, and support groups to empower them to make the necessary long-term, healthy lifestyle changes to prevent diabetes.
After Congress authorized the CDC to establish the NATIONAL DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM (National DPP), Skinny Gene was the first organization in San Diego County to partner join the NDPP and bring this evidence-based program to San Diegans.
COLLABORATING AND PREVENTING
We collaborate with federal agencies, state and local health departments, community organizations, health care professionals, and more to help make sure the all those at-risk are afforded the opportunity to prevent diabetes.
TURNING BACK TIME
86 million people have prediabetes and are already at a higher risk of heart disease and stroke.
Without programs like the Skinny Gene Diabetes Prevention Program, 15–30% of those at-risk would develop type 2 diabetes within 5 years.
REDUCING RISK
Our diabetes prevention program not only reduces a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes by over 50%, the program can also minimize the risk of developing other serious complications from the disease such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and amputations.
Together We Can Make A Difference
Join us in our national efforts to end the trend and prevent type 2 diabetes.
